Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Review

The real-time strategy game from the 90’s which changed the RTS genre forever is back in 2018. This remastered game is developed by Forgotten Empires and published by Microsoft Studios.

Reborngamers Review :

From the looks of the Definite Edition, it's so clear that Microsoft studios are pitching this game not to the 90’s Veteran’s alone but to the Modern gamers as well. The game which literally changed the RTS genre in the 90’s. The game which many veteran gamers remember playing. The players will definitely remember the sounds hssh-whoa when a unit is recruited and the iconic wololo from the priest all the good things are in this game too. The developer's aim was to improve the AI ‘s pathfinding, but that issue still persists in the game. The models which have been created as 3d models have been rendered back to 2d images because this game still runs in a 2d Engine with a 2d map. The models look better and the animations are much more stylish. The soundtrack is exceptional in this game. But the UI is still outdated and can't find any development done to it.

For the veteran gamers, all the knowledge will flow through automatically once they start playing. A true Skirmish based RTS, where you have to fight for the finite resources are still lively in this game, but it feels more organic in this series. Whether its gathering foo or building and defending a wonder still can be felt Unique and magical from the old days. The enhancements to the series are Control Groups, Multiple building order and population limit increased which are the main ones to watch.

The civilizations are totally 16 in numbers, each one having it's few certain units but most units are common. You may still find the amazing gameplay hold up to the modern era. The main campaign has 10 single player campaigns where some of us veterans have come to love history, this game has its unique feature and it is still very engaging because of some of the historical accuracies in the campaign. The technical upgrades are just amazing, particularly the expanded zoom feature is wonderful.

If you are into Multiplayer welcome back. Remember the 90’s where they had ping issues and crashes, all those good things and still present in this definitive edition. Apart from the good single player campaigns, you will not find any real enjoyment in multiplayer. It's tedious to progress through the Microsoft Store app.

Verdict :

A game which suits best for the AOE Fans. If you are a New gamer who wants to try the old RTS, this game can be much more interesting to you. All reviews aside we have to praise the developers for trying to bring back the game which changed many gamers life and the hard work put into the game not to remaster its roots but to tweak it that its relevant in 2018.
